Customer Review
Great for basic sewing
by Customer AIODODJMEJ1YW at February 03rd, 2005
I've needed a good basic sewing machine for a few years now and finally got the Singer #132. I couldn't be more pleased with it. It is light, quiet, easy to set up and practically works itself once you get started.
The manual was very clear and easy to follow, although I do think it was a bit skimpy.
The machine was easy to set up. Filling a new bobbin and threading the needle were a piece of cake.
The foot pedal, tension adjustment and other controls were very easy to use...although I feel the reverse lever might be hard for anyone with arthritic hands, and the clutch wheel is much to easy to engage or disengage if you're turning the stitch wheel by hand.
The machine does everything I ask of it, and does it brilliantly, except when I get to multiple thicknesses of fabric. It gets a little balky when I try to sew mitered corners and such-like. But other than that, I'm really impressed by the model.
For someone who just needs to sew seams, repair clothing or do small projects, this machine is perfect.
For the record, I grew up sewing on a 1950s-era Singer that was one of the crankiest, balkiest machines I have ever owned. I was therefore hesitant to buy another Singer. A neighbor convinced me to give the company another try, and I have to say that she was right.
